A second Iowa egg farm is recalling eggs as part of an investigation into a U.S. salmonella outbreak that is linked to almost 300 illnesses across the country, federal regulators said on Friday. Hillandale Farms of Iowa Inc is voluntarily recalling shell eggs potentially contaminated with salmonella in an expanding national egg recall that is among the largest in recent years, according to the Food and Drug Administration. .... The sweeping egg recalls come just weeks after a new FDA rule took effect on July 9 requiring large-scale producers to practice better safety and to test in the poultry house...

Jack DeCoster, the owner of the company at the center of one of the largest egg recalls in history, is no stranger to controversy. Jack DeCoster heads to the courtroom in the Wright County Court house to testify in defense of his family's hog confinement facilities in Clarion, Iowa, in this file photo. He's been involved in legal cases that have forced him to settle with the federal government for hiring illegal immigrants, for tolerating sexual harassment at his company, and has faced a litany of animal cruelty charges. DeCoster has also paid millions of dollars in fines and settlements...

Scientists have stumbled across the first example of a photosynthetic organism living inside a vertebrate's cells. The discovery is a surprise because the adaptive immune systems of vertebrates generally destroy foreign biological material. In this case, however, a symbiotic alga seems to be surviving unchallenged and might be giving its host a solar-powered metabolic boost. Algae cohabit with salamander embryos in their eggs and inside their cells.T. LEVIN/PHOTOLIBRARY.COM The embryos of the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) have long been known to enjoy a mutualistic relationship with the single-celled alga Oophila amblystomatis. The salamanders' viridescent eggs are coloured by...

Scientists wielding a powerful supercomputer have cracked the mystery of which came first, the chicken or the egg. The short answer: the chicken. The long answer is contained in the analysis called Structural Control of Crystal Nuclei by Eggshell Protein by British scientists Colin Freeman and John Harding of the University of Sheffield and David Quigley and P. Mark Rodger of the University of Warwick, published in the current journal Angewandte Chemie. It had long been suspected that the egg came first, but now we have the scientific proof that shows in fact the chicken came first, said Freeman. Sort...

Seems you can't order a pizza these days without someone having cracked an egg in the center. I finally relented and tried one at Jean-Georges Vongerichten's ABC Kitchen in New York. It was outstanding. A simple pizza topped with mushrooms turned wondrous when the creamy yolk spilled over the top. Time to make my own version. I started with a simple layer of rainbow chard, onions and garlic sauteed in olive oil. I topped that with a bit of prosciutto (think bacon and eggs) and some chunks of fresh goat cheese. Nothing short of amazing....
